How to Use a Keyword

If you would like search engines to place your blogs on their first few pages, you might want to do some keyword research to find the best words and phrases for your site. This is called Search Engine Optimization, or SEO.

What is a Keyword?:

A keyword is a word or phrase used to describe a topic to a search engine. For instance, if you're searching for "Blogger.com", you'll type that exact phrase into the search engine, making it a keyword. If I wanted to write about this particular platform, I would research the popular search terms associated with Blogger.com and use the most popular keyword several times in my article in hopes of bringing in those using that particular search term.

How Does One Find Keywords?:

If you want to find the keyword, or keywords, to best optimize your blog post, you'll need to research using some of the popular keyword tools. Google Adwords is one such tool, and Overture is another. One of the better tools is Digital Point which shows keyword results between two different keyword tools. Choose the keyword with the highest amount of searches, this is the term most people use when searching for your topic.

I Found a Keyword, Now What?:

Now that you know what keyword or phrase is most popular for your topic, you'll want to use it to create useful content. Write a post that makes sense and try and use the keyword in the title and several times throughout the post. This will optimize your content for the search engines, and hopefully, help you rank high so others visit your blog.

How to Make a Good First Impression with Your Blog

Blogs are a lot like people in that a good first impression goes a long way. In fact, a visitor will know in the first 30 seconds whether or not she or he finds your blog interesting enough to stay. There are several factors to consider when keeping folks interested in your blog. One of the most important is how to make a good first impression.

Create an Eye-Pleasing Design:

Keep your blog clean and uncluttered. Too many obtrusive ads and blinking widgets can be a turnoff. Visitors should be able to find the sections they want at a glance. Your contact information, your "About Me" page, the different categories and your blogroll should appear in plain view in your sidebar and not hidden by quizzes, polls and buttons.

Create Catchy Titles and Great Opening Paragraphs:

While it's important a title is optimized for search, you also want to be able to draw your readers in. Your title should give a clue of what's in store. Confusing or cutesy titles don't always go over too well.

Your opening paragraph should also draw people in. If the first sentence rambles or doesn't create an interest, your readers will most likely disappear. Draw them in with your title and first paragraph and they're likely to stay until the bottom line.

There's no better way to make a good first impression than with engaging, friendly content. Writing for the web is for shorter attention spans. Your posts should be to the point, but you should also write with the community in mind. Engage your readers. Ask questions and encourage comments.

Respond to Your Comments:

No one wants to attend a dull party. Comments encourage more comments. If your readers know you'll respond, they'll keep checking back. Others will also see you as friendly and engaging and join the conversation. Newbies will see your blog as a thriving community instead of "just" a blog. Besides, it's great to acknowledge the people who stop by.

You only get one shot at making a first impression. If you're not sure your blog is making a good impression, enlist a trusted friend or fellow blogger to stop by. Ask about his first impression. Sometimes a second eye does wonders.

Plan ahead for successful blogging
One of the reasons many blogs fail is because of poor planning. If you want a successful blog, you need a plan. Too many beginning bloggers see blogging as a quick way to make money online, but it's not. It takes time, creativity and lots of careful thought.

Your blog's topic

Do you already have a topic picked out? Think carefully about this. Before you decide to create one more blog about blogging, making money online, writing, working at home, or one of many other topics saturating the blogosphere, be sure you're offering something different. It's getting to the point where a lot of bloggers are just rehashing content, a sure way to keep readers away.

Research others in your niche

If you truly think you have a great idea, research your niche to see what else is out there.

Look at other popular blogs on the subject and think about how you can do it different and better. What are the other blogs missing? How can that particular community benefit from your blog?

Choose your platform

Do you know what platform to use? There are plenty of choices. Some of them are free, some of them require a subscription fee, most are good. If this is your first foray into the world of blogging, it's recommended you choose a platform that's beginner friendly. Both Blogger and Wordpress.com are great platforms for beginners.

Plan your design

Choose a design befitting your niche. There are plenty of free themes available for the different platforms or you or someone you hire can design a custom theme. Take care not to make it look too cluttered. Plan the design so the topics are easy to find and it's pleasing to the eye. If you're using advertising, leave room for them at eye level.

Research monetization methods

Are you planning to make money blogging? If so, you'll want to research the best monetization methods. Many new bloggers automatically assume Adsense is the only solution for them, and this couldn't be farther from the truth. Your blog can be a vessel to sell your own products and books, you can look into affiliate advertising or even sell your own ads. While Adsense works well for many, it's not the only game in town.

Schedule your time accordingly

How much time do you hope to put into blogging. If it's a few minutes each day, you're not cut out for it! Blogging is a big time commitment. In addition to posting one to several times daily, you're going to have to take some time each day to work on social networking and promotion.

Should you have your own domain?

Not all bloggers use their own domain, many use a subdomain belonging to their blog platform or other network. While this is fine for the beginning blogger, serious bloggers need to consider whether or not they'll want to blog on someone else's subdomain if they become popular. Not only is owning your own domain good SEO, but it'll also save you from having to move your blog later.

How will others find your blog?

Do you have a marketing or promotional strategy? Other people have to find your blog and for this you'll need a plan. Will you use social networking to bring others to your blog? Perhaps you're planning on doing some guest blogging or even want to take out a press release. If you want really decent daily traffic, the promotional efforts and pimping never stop.

These are just some of the considerations for anyone planning a blog. Taking the time to plot out your course of action can mean the difference between a very successful blog and one that doesn't even get out of the gate.
